The Average Joe Award Reviews By Steven Crellin “All You Need is Love?”
This film had me curious from the second the titles started. I watched the opening scene and I was immediately confused because I was not sure if I just saw what I saw. As the film progressed, the opening tiles made sense and I was sucked into a “bizzaro” world where everything was backwards. As I watched the story of a young girl who was different than everyone else around her, the totally unique view of the world made me feel like I was that girl. This is what it would be like to constantly live in fear of people at school, your teachers, your friends and your family. After watching the film, it left me feeling haunted and very humble. It is difficult for me to genuinely see myself in someone else’s shoes when it comes to the matter of being a minority because I am not one. This film grabs you and shows what your world would be like if everything AROUND you was different, but you were the same. The acting was simply awe inspiring and I could not help feeling deeply affected by this film on many levels. I will always remember this film, the totally unique twist of reality, the acting and the jaw dropping finale. This was an amazing film from the beginning to the end. “High Maintenance” When I think about the great comedies in the past few years, one thing really stands out above everything else; clever and edgy scripts with more than 2 interesting people are hard to find. “High Maintenance” is just this kind of movie. You fall in love with the main character and the deep despair that his normal life is. I can relate in many ways to his situation and the things you will do to get a little spark back into your life when you are married. But the humor and genius wasn’t just in the protagonist, it was the people around him that made this film one of the most memorable films I have seen. I laughed from the start to the end and loved every bit of this film. The thing that I felt most at the end was longing for more. I was seriously upset to see the end credits roll. I wanted more. I needed more of this crazy world and the insane mother in law. I do no think I have laughed this hard in a film in a long time. I was simply blown away. “The Carrier” Unlike most of the other films I saw at the Lady Filmmakers Festival this weekend, the film “The Carrier” was a star studded piece with many well-known and amazing actors. But the fact that these people were in the film had little to do with one of the most personal stories I have ever heard. This was the story of a journey that a mother took which was beyond hard, beyond scary and beyond heart breaking. The progression of this film was a very deep and personal view on how far you would go to do the right thing for your family, no matter how hard it is. To say that the ending was a surprise would be the understatement of the decade. I loved this movie because it showed us that the things that need to be done are never easy. As a matter of fact, doing the right thing might end up being the hardest thing a person ever does in their whole life. In the case of “The Carrier”, it was. I thoroughly enjoyed this film and it took me a few minutes to compose myself after the credits had finished rolling.
