Jill’s father is stationed in New Guinea during WWII, whilst Jill and her sisters wait at home in Sydney for news from the front line. The women are left to fear the worst, upon learning that an RAAF squadron, near the village where their father is stationed, has sustained heavy casualties. So Jill, armed with a map of the South Pacific, takes it upon herself to bring her father home.” Jack & Jill as a nursery Rhyme gives very little away about its characters. Who are Jack and Jill? Why were they fetching a pail of water? How did Jack fall? And why was Jack so upset by the fall that he ran home so suddenly? These questions ‘air-hockeyed’ around our heads for the longest time and we kept starting sentences to one another with “what if…ahhhh no.” Then one day one of us said, and neither of us can remember which one, but we know it was said: “what if Jill had lied about why they went up the hill in order to conceal some extraordinary adventure?” From here on in, we knew we wanted to play with the gap between wonderment and reality and test the tenuous bond between these two worlds. For us, this film is a wish, a wish that perhaps, even in the darkest of dark times, we might all be brave enough to find that hope we need.
